Why I love the ‘Love and Luck’ podcast

I came to the ‘Love and Luck’ podcast through a colleague. He voices a recurring character, so I started from the beginning, anticipating his arrival a few episodes in. The story centres on a young man called Kane and his fledgling romance with Jason.

As they develop their unlikely pairing – Jason is a night-owl and loves to party while Kane is an early bird and prefers more quiet activities – Kane comes into the possession of a box of tapes. Recorded on them is the voice of his beloved mother, who is deceased. Triggering a great deal of emotions and anxiety, Jason is there to support Kane through it all. It’s a pleasure to hear their togetherness unfold, built on a sturdy foundation of open, honest communication.

I wouldn’t have found this podcast had it not been for my colleague’s involvement, but I’m glad to have listened to its two seasons (a third is planned).

Kane and Jason are dedicated to building a safe space in their community for queer young people, and the underlying themes of love, trust and safety bolster the lives of all touched by them. For many of the people drawn to the bar they open, their families have cut them off. But as Kane and Jason show through acts of unconditional love, families come in varied guises. If the one you were born into isn’t loving and supportive, you can find and make your own. What a blessing.

Kane and Jason embrace the discarded and rejected, open their hearts to them, sometimes literally house them in a safe place. From here, the unloved are slowly able to unfurl the tension and anxiety under which they’ve been living. Learn to trust again. Realise they’re safe and that there’s nothing to fear among these new friends, their new family.

I love this podcast for celebrating the power of love and kindness. We can never have too much of those. And it brings a touch of magic and time travel, too.

Presented in 10-minute episodes, ‘Love and Luck’ is written by Erin Kyan and produced by Passer Vulpes Productions in Melbourne, Australia.
